Practicing Independent Learning
Let's back the boat up and first talk about why kids need to practice independent learning - yes, even at preschool age.
When young students know what comes next and feel successful working independently, they feel safe learning new concepts and don't need an adult hovering nearby.
Helping Kids Practice Working Independently
My months of the year worksheets are self-explanatory. You can set your child up with their work and be able to go brush your teeth or maybe just drink some coffee. Get that self-care in, Mama!
I like setting you up with a resource where you can print any worksheet and have a two-fold, productive moment; one for yourself and one for your child.
I also like making educational activities and worksheets that are good for helping kids visualize what needs to happen without reading directions. This boosts their confidence and success!
Why Teach Months of the Year to Young Children
It's important to introduce the months of the year to little ones as soon as possible so that they begin to grasp the concept of time.
This is a foundation for their understanding of telling time, calendars, seasons, holidays, and so on - it's also a foundation for math and science.

When To Start Teaching Months of the Year
Teaching all the months to students as young as four isn't unreasonable, as long as the fun activities are age appropriate.
The worksheets I've created work best for kids between 5-7 years old, depending on their writing skills and ability to focus and retain information. You know your student best!
There's no rush for them to master knowing the months of the year in order. It can take years, and you'll be reinforcing these calendar and time concepts throughout their early elementary years.

How To Teach Children The Months of the Year
Use A Big Calendar
Starting from preschool, parents can use morning calendar time to introduce months of the year activities in fun ways.
You can certainly use your own calendar. I like to use the giant pocket chart calendars we change at the beginning of each month.
Here’s our pocket chart in all it’s glory! Perfect for calendar time, learning the months of the year, days of the week, counting numbers, patterns, etc., etc.!
Mine has cards for tracking the weather and special events like birthdays we will celebrate that month. I use Post-it notes with (terribly) drawn images over the days since most little ones can't read yet. They'll show a picture like a soccer ball for days that we have practice.
Use Songs
There's a song on YouTube with a chicken (yes.) singing the months of the year. It's catchy. It works for us. I'm sure you can find something that works for you!
There's SO much research showing that songs help kids learn - the rhythm and rhyme; it's like brain glue. So sing songs about the months - it'll help cement the correct order (patterns, math!), just like singing the ABCs helps with order and pre-reading.
Use Books About Seasons to Reinforce The Various Months
Books are fantastic for reinforcing the seasons while you're learning the months of the year. The concepts go hand-in-hand. July is summer, and February is winter.
I wrote about some fantastic ways to teach the four seasons with my post on preschool science! That page has links to book lists relating to each season which is uber helpful while teaching the months of the year.
Use Months of The Year Worksheets
When you're ready to take learning to paper - to reinforce recognizing, reading, writing, and sequencing the names of the months, the worksheets are effective and fun!

You can print a worksheet to practice, a blank calendar to color and fill in, then wash, rinse, and repeat each month! You can reinforce learning with daily routines like morning calendar time to observe the date and weather, then set your child up with a worksheet to practice reading and spelling the current month's name.

Year-Round Learning
Learning the months of the year, days of the week, calendar skills, and learning about a particular season are all skills that take time to gain even a basic understanding of.
Putting all these concepts in the correct order is a big task for a little kid. But these are life skills and warrant being an entire, year-long curriculum for homeschooled kids in preschool and kindergarten! For example, my daughter's 2nd grade math book still touched on calendar skills and months of the years!
Have fun with it - sing songs, play games, and don't forget to grab erasable colored pencils (I'm obsessed, haha!) for your little ones to do their worksheets with!
Calendar Skills for Older Students
Don’t forget to reinforce these skills well into the elementary years! These pages help kids with word work and spelling - plus are a fun way to switch up the usual lesson!
