Hummingbird Homeschool FAQ

Welcome to the FAQ! Here you'll find answers to common homeschooling questions parents search for every day, plus links to posts that provides tips and resources that can be tailored for your family.

What is homeschooling?

Homeschooling is when parents take responsibility for educating their children at home instead of sending them to a traditional school. It offers flexibility, personalized learning, and a chance to nurture curiosity at each child’s pace. You can check out my Homeschool 101 page for more resources and in depth information.

How do I start homeschooling my child?

First, check your state’s homeschooling laws. Then decide on your homeschooling style (like Charlotte Mason, classical, or unschooling) and choose resources that match your child’s learning style. Create a routine that works for your family and start gradually—it’s okay to learn alongside your child!

What homeschool curriculum do you recommend?

At Hummingbird Homeschool, I love practical, engaging programs like All About Reading, Math Mammoth, IEW’s Fix‑It Grammar, Real Science Odessey, and Build Your Library. Check out this homeschool curriculum page to learn about various options to help your family build a curriculum that fits.

How much does homeschooling cost?

It depends! Some families spend under $100 per year using free resources, while others budget $500–$1,000+ for curriculum, field trips, and materials. You can often reduce costs by shopping used or joining local co‑ops (usually not the drop off ones). I’ve gotten a lot of material from Facebook groups and have found lots of cheap finds off Amazon!

What are the legal requirements to homeschool in California?

Each state is different - we currently live in California and California law requires filing a Private School Affidavit each year or joining a charter/private school program. You’ll also keep attendance records and basic coursework documentation. Check out HSLDA for your state’s legal requirements.

Can I homeschool multiple kids while working?

Yes! Many parents combine independent study, online lessons, and co-op classes. Planning your week in advance and keeping lessons flexible helps balance work and teaching. I work full time and homeschool 3 kids! Reach out if you want help :)

How do homeschooled kids socialize?

They join sports, art classes, library clubs, co‑ops, and volunteer activities. Many homeschoolers interact with kids and adults of all ages, often gaining confidence and social skills along the way. Learn all about it with Homeschool Socialization & Finding Community.

Can I homeschool a child with special needs?

Absolutely. Homeschooling lets you customize teaching methods, pacing, and materials to your child’s strengths. Here’s my post on homeschooling gifted and 2e children. Here’s my homeschool curriculum 101 list where I list what’s helped our family overcome dyslexia.

How do I keep records and create a homeschool portfolio?

Keep samples of work, attendance sheets, reading lists, and notes about progress. Many families use binders, digital folders, or planner apps. These help you stay organized and meet state requirements. See this list of posts relating to homeschool organization.

How do I transition from public school to homeschool?

Notify your child’s school following state guidelines from HSLDA, then take a short adjustment period (“deschooling”). Start slow and easy with subjects your child enjoys before adding more structure.

Do you offer printables or lesson plans?

Yes! I create lesson planners, unit studies, and printable activities you can use right away—many are free or low cost. Visit my TPT Shop to see everything available.
