Who Are These Worksheets For?

These worksheets are perfect for anyone needing to learn to recognize and read color words.

That could be as early as first grade or even kindergarten, but really, they're for anyone learning to read and spell. These would also be great for English language learners!

These color words worksheets are a bit too hard for littles (preschool age children) who are just learning color recognition and are at the pre-reading and pre-writing stages.

Sight word worksheets generally start around 5-7 years old, which would be a great time to introduce your child to these pages. Again, they are meant for kids who are practicing their reading, writing, and spelling.

Printable Worksheets For Each Color Name

To help students learn the color words, I've created a few practice pages for each individual color word. There are plenty of fun options for repetition and practice!

. These color words worksheets help students:

  • recognize and read color words

  • practice correct spelling

  • trace and write color words

  • use correct spelling

  • develop fine motor skills with cutting and gluing exercises

Each color also has fun Find & Color pages to help with color recognition. Kids have to read the words and color them the correct color. This helps make sure they can recognize the colors' names and aren't guessing based on beginning letters, like brown, black, and blue.

Color Words Worksheets For Handwriting Practice

If your child is just starting with letter formation and spelling, these worksheets work perfectly to help reinforce proper technique. I love a multipurpose lesson, and this one crosses off sight word recognition and handwriting.

This can be a fun way to switch up handwriting practice because the work is novel. It doesn't seem like handwriting practice. It seems like color work! There's generally less fatigue when the child doesn't correlate skill practice with what they're doing.

Extra Color Words Worksheets

I also included a fun word search and a cut-and-paste puzzle.

While I generally like to make my resources in black and white to not kill your printer, I've included a couple of color pages, including a colorful poster with crayons colored and labeled with their color name that you can hang up as a reference sheet.

More Activities to Learn Color Sight Words

Since printables should only be a small tool in your teaching toolbox, here are some other ways to reinforce learning color words without any printable worksheets:

  • Color Word Hunt: Hide objects around the house or classroom that correspond to the color words and have the child find them and identify the color words.

  • Color Words Bingo: Create a bingo game using color words and call out the words for your kid to mark on their bingo card.

  • Color Word Art Projects: A fun project is to write out the color word in thick block letters and then color or decorate inside with various shades of that color. You can use any medium or grab pictures from magazines to create a collage.

  • Color Word Memory Game: Make a memory game with color word cards, and have your child match pairs of color words.

  • Sorting Colors: Create a collection of objects in different colors and ask them to sort them by color. Have a way to create written labels for the groups
