Scholastic Book Clubs For Homeschool: Your Wallet's New Best Friend

*This post is not sponsored in any way - nor does Scholastic have any affiliate program. This is fueled by my appreciation for a free resource that most homeschool families don't know about!

Dear Families,

As a former teacher, let me introduce you to your newest best friend: Scholastic Book Club.

Scholastic Book Club is a wildly popular program commonly found in schools either through order forms. You might remember Scholastic for hosting book fairs - they usually hold a book fair during back-to-school time or late spring.

With Book Club, school kids get monthly, age-specific flyers that offer books, resources, games, and more for order at discounted prices. And when kids order books, teachers can get a Scholastic Book Club coupon promo code for free stuff!

Did you know it's...

  1. Totally Free

  2. Available for homeschooling families!

Uhhh, The Library Is Free... Why Would I Need Scholastic?

  • Holidays

  • Birthdays

  • Incentives

  • Gifts

This is a golden resource for knowing what's current and cool in your child's world - what are their friends into? What's the talk on the street? What are the other kids on the soccer team reading?

Wings Of Fire - the Scholastic graphic novel version (from the library!)

Being homeschooled can sometimes be a drag when you can't relate to the other kids your own age and don't know what the kids on the playground are all talking about.

My daughter knows that reading Wings of Fire is cool, and that probably none of the other girls have read White Fang. She also knows that for her age, Dog Man is cool, not Cat Kid. That's for babies. (ok, it's totally not, and she likes Cat Kid, but when you're going into 3rd grade Dog Man is cooler) My son going into 5th? No Dog Man. He can secretly like it (which he does - we've read all 11 books in this house), but we don't talk about Dog Man.

What Is A Scholastic Book Club?

Book Clubs offer a massive selection of books and activities for purchase for all ages and reading levels. From picture books, to chapter books, to graphic novels, you'll find them all here.

The books are carefully curated by experts in children's literature and cover a wide range of topics, from science and history to social issues and diversity.

That's the Club part. When you sign up, you put in the grades that your kids are in (roughly) and your preferred measure of reading level (I check "Not Applicable"), and you get curated material appropriate for THAT kid! It's their own little reading club!

You place scholastic book orders online through the scholastic store and BOOM! You’ve got affordable, interesting books showing up at your doorstep.

What Types of Books Do They Have?

Scholastic fosters a love for reading by offering books that are engaging, thought-provoking, and diverse. The books cover a wide range of topics and styles, from classic literature to modern-day gems.

By offering a diverse selection, children can expand their understanding of the world and develop empathy for others.

How Do I Find Out Which Books Are Available?

In schools, the Scholastic flyers are monthly handouts featuring the most popular books for the age, season, holiday, etc. Being a homeschool, you get the digital flyers online, which makes it super easy for online ordering.

Example of a scholastic book club digital flyer

Scholastic Book Clubs have monthly flyers for each grade level up to 5th, then switches to Middle School. Each level has multiple flyers - including Spanish

The digital flyers are interactive and have super easy instructions for how to use them online or download them as a PDF.

But you have more options than what’s in their flyers!

You can search their online store and look for certain features, like if you're looking for a specific topic or book, or different ages and reading levels. You can use it like a marketplace and browse. Their navigation system is phenomenal!

My Kid Doesn't Like To Read. Could Scholastic Book Club Help?

Reluctant reader? Download the digital flyers as PDFs and let your child circle what they like, just like a toy catalog! BUT you're gaining valuable insight into what BOOK topics they're interested in!

You can also use their awesome book finder for populated suggestions based on your input about your child.

With their Book Finder, I picked that my child was 4, I selected five of her favorite topics from a list, and BOOM! It tossed about 30 book suggestions my way.

How Much Does It Cost To Join The Scholastic Book Club?

Joining is FREE! There are no gimmicks or catches!

I absolutely love that they offer super high-quality (and popular!) books at affordable prices. This is a huge plus for homeschooling families on a budget!

This book from Scholastic Book Clubs is $5. Note that it is a paperback (most of their available books are)

How ridiculous is this?? Basically, it’s only available as a hardcover and for $14 (without the CD). My daughter LOVES “If You…” books - if I were looking for a birthday gift, I’d choose the $5 paperback from Scholastic Book Clubs

You can also earn free books with scholastic book orders, which means more books for your kids to enjoy!

My secret ninja tip is to use those free books as gifts during the holidays when budgets tend to snowball out of control.

Using A Scholastic Coupon Code For Free Books

They have tons of scholastic coupon codes and incentives. A frequent one is their scholastic book club $5 coupon code (as seen in the image below). That's exactly why teachers promote Book Clubs every month in their classrooms - they can get free books and build their classroom library with those monthly scholastic book orders!

So don’t forget to enter the coupon code at checkout, that’s probably my biggest problem - I’m awful at remembering to use coupon codes on pretty much any website…

Luckily, they do try to make it pretty easy. You’ll usually find a banner at the top with the current scholastic book clubs promo code. I took a screen shot (see below) of what the banner looks like.

The scholastic promo codes are offered all the time - it’s how teachers build their class libraries!

How Do I Sign Up For Scholastic Book Club?

Easy-peasy - but do be sure you make a homeschool account! That saves your shipping costs!

  1. Visit Scholastic's Book Club website and click on the "Create An Account" arrow.

  2. Choose to create an account under Teacher/Administrator/Homeschooler and follow the prompts to create an account.

That homeschool option gets you free shipping and promotions for free books!

How Do I Order & What About Shipping?

The ordering process is straightforward and customizable. You choose the books that best suit your child's interests and needs. Pick your book, add the scholastic promo code for parents, and choose to ship to your “school.” Boom! Done.

Plus, the books are delivered right to your doorstep (aka… your child’s school ), which adds to the convenience factor. So, for families who are more rural or secluded or just don't have many bookstore options with kids' selections - Scholastic is perfect

I chopped the image to hide my address, but this scholastic book club order will come right to my front door! I registered our Hummingbird Homeschool as our school, with our home address -easy!

Shipping is free when you set up your account as a homeschool. If that gets messed up because you got confused with the account setup, call them and have it corrected! Other accounts pay shipping to the home!

What If My Kids Hate The Books?

Well, that’s a bummer. But they’ve got your back!

100% Satisfaction Guarantee, baby!

No stress! Scholastic Books Clubs want your children to like reading! Their 100% Satisfaction Guarantee policy seriously rocks.

Scholastic Book Clubs Provide More Than Just Books!

I appreciate having access to these resources, which not only save me time and money, but also ensure that my kids are getting the most out of their reading experiences. How awesome is that??
